T
he area is a polder full of birds near Amsterdam and the old fishing village of Durgerdam.
The 'big polder' consists largely of grassland where meadow birds such as redshank, lapwing and black-tailed godwit find their refuge.
The 'small polder' consists of puddles and reed swamps. Many migratory birds come here to look for food after their long journey from Africa. Like the cream-white spoonbill that 'spoons' spikes and shrimps from the shallow water. Endangered birds breed in the reed countries. Kingfishers, harrier harriers and northern voles are also found in IJdoorn.
