I n recent years, the dunes on Schiermonnikoog have become increasingly dense with sea buckthorns, alder trees, hawthorns and birches. As a result, the dunes on Schiermonnikoog are blowing less and less. The rabbits that always grazed the dunes have virtually disappeared due to deadly diseases. Nowadays, there is also a lot of nitrogen in the air which makes seedlings grow even faster. As a result, the original dune flora is becoming increasingly difficult and is threatened with extinction.
If you like being surrounded by nature. And are passionate about nature preservation, this project is just for you. Everyone works at their own pace and even if you can't handle it physically, there is plenty to do. Are you visiting the island and do you want to help us with dune maintenance then you are very welcome!
